leagl threat
I have received a letter threatening me with legal action if I do not pay the amount requested - however I did not request nor have I received the product for which they are demanding money. Is their action illegal?

Hi - they're not scammers- I have received goods from them previously (gas bottles, paid for upon receipt) however they sent me a bill last month for gas I had not received (or asked for) and I raised this with them - they promised to sort it out . However I have now received a letter threatening to take me to court unless I settle the account. It is obviously a clerical error, however whilst in discussion with some friends, someone raised the point that it was illegal to threaten court action if thismoney wasn't owed so I decided to ask here.
keithlbw- I reiterate a previous comment - at what point did I ask whether I should pay? That was NOT my question - my question was whether the company's action is legal. I really think you need to learn to read the questions properly - and the subsequent comments, before embarrassing yourself with posting childish, rude and ignorant comments.
I think it depends. If they are scammers and were threatening you with court action and they knew that they were just trying it on then it would be illegal and you could report them to the police.
However this gas company has made a **** up somewhere and genuinely believes you owe them money. So they are not making empty threats as in their eyes you have had the gas and wont pay for it.
