if someone is accused of a crime, and they are given a date for court, but it's ages off, under what circumstances can they be refused bail?
D'ya know what I mean?
There hasn't been a case in court yet, so the person is not guilty, yet they are keeping him in prison until the court date.
How can they do that?

They can do it because the law allows it in certain circumstances:

If he poses a danger to others
If he is likely to abscond and not attend court
If he is likely to interfere with witnesses

By the way, it is s.4 Bail Act 1976 that gives the court the power to refuse bail.
