How many days by law can I have off in work if a member of my family die?

There's no statutory figure. Basically, you're allowed to take 'reasonable' (unpaid) time off to arrange and attend the funeral. See here:

That 'reasonable unpaid time off' only applies if the relative is a dependent.

If the relative is not a dependent it all depends on the compassionate leave your employer is prepared to give, or the terms of your contract.
Or in short, None.

Though it would be a pretty uncaring employer that enforced that if it was someone very close.
