Thought i heard on the one show bbc 1, that they can not chase up a debt from over 6 years ago is that right??

As long as they have always had your correct address/contact details during that period of time, I believe so (i.e. you haven't done a runner, gone abroad or disappeared off the face of the planet etc.).
It is 6 years from the debtor's last contact - whether that be by phone, letter, making payment or personal visit. After this time, the debt can still be chased, but not taken to court.

If the debtor has moved and failed to notify them of the new address, that rule does not apply.

As above, but with caveats.

Unsecured debt may become statute barred after 6 years (England, Wales, N Ireland) and 5 years (Scotland), however secured debt is legally enforceable for 12 years (E, W & NI) and 20 years (S).
