Do i have to pay my soon to be ex-husband's credit card debt?
I got married on Jan 1st last year and my husband left me in 5 months later. He has just contacted me and said that he wants me to help him pay his credit card debt of approx 15000. Whilst some of the debt was run up during our brief marriage (we are not divorced yet as neither of us can afford to do so), he is the sole account holder on both credit cards and I have never been the joint account holder. Where do I stand legally?

If he thinks you have benefited from the expenditure he could always sue you in the County Court. He would have to prove that the expenditure was made in expectation that you would pay him for it and that you benefited from it. Somehow I think he would be very hard put to do so. If he succeeded you would owe him - not the credit card companies.
Tell him you will but only after he has paid half for all your expenditure as well which of course will equal exactly what he wants from you ;-)
Cheeky git - even as a named account holder on a CC with my previous partner I was not liable for any of the debt. Why? Because I hadn't used my card and he could not prove I had had any benefit from what he had spent on his

As long as the Credit Card is in his name only then he is liable to all his debts. If bankruptcy is not an option his liability will involve only part of any of his name in ownership in joint named assets. You are not liable to a single penny to any liability he is commited for disposal of joint assets for capital for the purpose of recovery to meet his debts.
