For my birthday i was given a pair of brand new ghd straightners from a local hairdressers.

But, as i already had a pair the person who bought them for me gave me the receipt so i could take them back for a refund.

So i did this today and went into the shop with my receipt but the hairdresser told me that the shop 'did not do refunds unless there was a fault'.

am i correct in thinking that this is against the law and that as a consumer i am entitled to a full refund as i have proof of purchase and they are in the exact same condition they were bought in?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

You are not entitled to a refund unless the item is faulty. Try selling them on ebay if you are really desperate for the cash.
as above, you are wrong and the shop is right.
You would only be correct if the person buying the item had agreed this as one of the conditions of sale.
Unless a business displays a sign, stating that they will give an exchange or refund on unwanted goods (which then forms part of the contract of purchase), no vendor is ever obliged to offer such an exchange or refund. (Unless, of course, there's a fault with the item).

You might, for example, buy an item of clothing in a shop and (before you've even walked away from the till) realise that you've picked up the wrong size. If you seek an exchange or refund the shopkeeper has every right to say "Tough. Get out of my shop".

As others have said it is a gesture of goodwill to return goods and most shops do this. If I were you (and feeling brave), you could make sure you speak to a different person then return them and say they aren't working correctly!
