How much notice must employer give
Can anyone tell me what the law is on being given notice to leave your job? My stepbrother turned up for work this morning and was sent away straight away being told he was no longer because they were overstaffed after taking someone else on? Are they allowed to do this? Any answers will be helpful, thanks :))

If they paid him for his one week's notice period, the employer has acted lawfully, unless he has a contract which specifically states a longer notice period is due in which case he must be paid for the full notice period.

Not that simple, Whitebear. Your statement is quite possibly incorrect.
If he is a temp on the payroll of the employer, Ethel's answer above applies.
If he is an agency temp (and hence paid by the agency, not the organisation where he is working), his notice period is whatever the agreement is with the agency.

Thanks for all your answers, he wasn't a temp and was originally employed as part time staff. They then increased his hours to full time then more recently they slowly dropped his hours right back to almost nothing then suddenly on wednesday he was told thats it,dont start your shift we dont need you anymore, goodbye. I thought he would have been entitled to a weeks notice surely? But if he needs to have given 1 years full service there isnt much else we can do is there? Thanks again everyone x
