Salary paid into bank account after redundancy

An ex-colleague has recently confided in me that money was paid into his account following redundancy.

Is he obliged to pay this money back and also on what terms - apparently the money was not noticed by him due to the amount of money paid into his bank account already by the company from his redundancy payment.

Is the ex-employer at any fault for having his bank account details still active on their system?

He should check first with them to make sure that it is a mistake - there are one or two reasons it is to cover a previous underpayment. But if it is a genuine mistake, the money is not his and he should pay it back.
Even if the ex-employer is at fault it makes no difference to his obligation to pay it back if it's an overpayment.

Right well, he's notified the payroll department so we'll just have to see what happens
