Tenants furnishings damaged by landlords contractors
I rent a flat from my local council. The flat is currently being modernised by contractors appointed by the council, and most of our possesions were taken to storage by the councils appointed removal and storage company. Our white goods were to be kept in the flat and the contractors were to lift and relay carpets as required. We were to live in the flat while the work was ongoing.
Day one my fridge was badly damaged when they dropped a boiler on it. Living room carpet is badly creased and stained with silicone sealant. Bedroom carpet is filthy with trodden in brick dust and water spilled from the old rad. Removal company returned our £2000 suite absolutely filthy and torn in two places. 2 tables and a chest of drawers were also damaged. They have offered to send an upholterer to repair the suite but have not offered to clean it. Cost of cleaning is over £120.
The housing officer has told me it is not their concern and that I have to deal with their contractors by myself.
Basically where do I stand. Am I responsible for getting them to put things right and should I accept a repair to an expensive suite. Had I more space I would give further details of this whole sorry affair.
