change of name - done but not by deed poll

When my friend and partners father left home they were very young and their mother registered them at school using her maiden name not the fathers name as on the birth certificate. I don't know how it happened but the mother was allowed to do this whether she produced the birth certificate i don't know but since then practically 18yrs ago they have always been known by the mothers maiden name with no deed poll ever having been made. now that they have discovered that this 'change' of name was never done legally they are both worried about the legal implications especially as both are wanting to marry. anyone heard of anything the like?

you can change your name to anything you like, and as long as you don't use that new name for freud or anything illegal it's perfectly fine to do so.

Both of my sons have their fathers name. One of them goes by my name though. His choice.

My only problem with it is that it looks like I've got 3 kids by 3 different Dads on FB.

As Boo said, as long as you can prove your name when needs be for anything legal then it should be fine, maybe just a few more administrative hoops and best to keep records if possible.

What have they done as regards things like bank accounts, passports, other official things, surprises me it hasn't come up sooner.

Providing ID for anything legal or things like mortgages might need some sorting - might be an idea to get a change of name dede sorted with the circumstances drafted into it so it can be produced, if required, as a further backup.

If you have it done through a solicitor they would have to go through ID procedures, check circumstances etc... anyhow so could be useful to get everything straightened out.
