sun block in schools

does anyone know if theres a legal reason why schools cant apply sunblock to children if its supplied and consent is given by the mum/dad.
I asked the school and have just been told they cant but im concerned that a factor 50 applied at 8am isnt going to be affective at midday when the kids go into the playground and as my child is quite fair skinned hes prone to burn.

no i don't think there is any law about it , my childrens nursery used to ask us to bring some in for the children and they would apply it if they went out.

There is a legal reason - the more paranoic schools fear repercussions if anything goes wrong. Consent or no consent.

I work at a nursery and we're not allowed to apply cream. The children can bring it with them and apply it themselves (!), but honestly how can a three and a-half year old apply cream effectively!! Nonsense really!!

Well I can understand teachers being reluctant to do this.
Time is one factor- teachers have enough to do in many schools without having to apply suncream.
Also, imagine a situation where a male teacher rubs suncream into a girl's legs and is accused of touching her in an inappropriate way.
Third, if the cream isn't applied properly and the child burns I can imagine some parents making a claim for damages

Applying sun screen to children is not the job of a teacher, if you are concerned about your child make arrangements for the application yourself.

I never once had suncream at school when I was younger.

you can buy once a day suncream which may help the situation

My grandson attends nursery class at the local school. they say that they will supervise the application of suncream, but cannot apply the cream to the child! Is a four year old able to apply suncream when needed!..........I don't think so! just silly!.........

Considering teachers are CRB checked, I`d have thought they would be able to apply sun lotion, my wife works in a nursery and they don`t send kids home in sh!tty nappies

when little CRX was at nursery they told all parents to send in sunscreen for each child, labelled and they would apply it to the kids.
If parents forgot to send any, they would have their own bottles which they would use. They always made sure the children were protected.

the private nursery my youngest grandson attends will apply suncream, as long as you supply it, but the nursery class the older one attends will only supervise the application of suncream! at the end day, he is just 4! he is not going to remember that he needs to apply his suncream before he goes outside tp play!!.........It's just crazy!.................

I work in a pre-school with children as young as 2. We can change dirty bottoms but cannot apply sun cream? Seems ludicrous to me
It's not 'illegal' anyway, it's set out as a guideline by OFSTED

Because teachers need a CRB check, any allegation of improper behaviour, even if they are not charged with anything, let alone convicted, could result in them being sacked and never being able to work as a teacher again. It simply isn't worth the risk.

I would of thought that it was maybe something to do with if the kids have an allergic reaction,the teachers cannot be held responsible....however if another toddler squirts suncream at another and they react,its not the teachers fault so everything is fine and dandy!
Crazy world we live in.
Why with health and safety are shades not provided in school playgrounds?Mine kids junior school playground was a sun-trap,10 minutes out there and you could be a lobster

The allergy thing is where they have to bring their own cream, no cream = no outside play

ojread2 - some Nurseries and Pre Schools wont change dirty nappies etc. The parent gets a call to come in and do it. Crazy, I know.

it's all down to this poxy compensation culture we live in. Teachers are petrifeid of being sued if, after applying lotion, the child then burns.

this country is going down the sh1tter because of this greed we seem to have for sueing each other.
