He should phone the prison and ask.
Not anything, no. For example drugs, wide screen TVs, knives and mobile phones wouldn't be allowed.
Is there anything in particular he wants to take? I would have thought the prison had a written guide for visitors- or it may be on their website
As far as I know , nothing can be taken in to a jail visit. Possibly a gift could be left with the prison officers who could pass it on if it is allowed.
Prison visits are very strictly controlled, they are the main way stuff like drugs and mobile phones are smuggled in.
Unless your son has prior permission from the prison authorities, many prisons won't allow him to take anything to his friend.

Somewhat strangely, anything sent to a prisoner often has to be posted to them. For example, some friends of mine wanted to take a radio to a family member in Chelmsford prison but they weren't allowed to leave it with prison staff (so that it could have been checked over in the prison's post room) but they had to take it home and then post it (so that it ended up in that same post room anyway!).

However some prisons do permit certain items to be taken in. See here for general guidance:

then phone the prison for specific information. The phone number can be found from here:

I wondered if he could take him ciggies or choccys or have I been watching to much porridge
You cant take anything in with you. After showing your ID you put everything from your pockets in to a locker. You can take in some cash (£10) to buy tea, soft drinks or crisps etc. from WRVS canteen. You are checked through security like at an airport and dogs check around for drugs. Then you are allowed into the visiting area.
As indicated in my first link above, SOME prisons will allow visitors to take ciggies and chocolate for prisoners but the rules vary between prisons. The only way to get a definitive answer is to phone the prison.

There's a difference in treatment between convicted and remand prisoners. A prisoner who's been remanded in custody is allowed cigarettes, chocolate, and the like. Convicted prisoners find the regime stricter.
I have a great recipe for a 'Choccy File Cake'! Perhaps the best thing to take would be a gorgeous girl in skimpy clothes - that would make him realise what a kn0b he's been to end up there in the first place...

I think drugs and mobile phones are allowed. Or is it the prison warders who take these in?
