Stolen property

If I think that something of value has been taken and then sold, am I allowed to go to the shop where I think it's been taken and see if they have a record of the person whom I think took it? I don't want th polic involved. Thnks in advance

Surely if the shop
had a record of the person who took it, they would be going to the polic themselves.

^ But the shop don't know the goods were possibly stolen yet, do they?
They might tell you .. they might not.
If you do definitely identify as yours, tell them you may involve the police if they don't tell you, and see what they say. Give them your name/tel. no to demonstrate you are genuine.

If you go to the shop to query whether someone has stolen from them they are likely to contact the Police. If it was bought legitimately they have, as far as I am aware under data protection, no right to disclose this to you

If you are wrong then , technically, you could be sued for defamation of character.

Presumably by shop you mean like a jeweller who sells second-hand stuff or a pawn shop or something? Do you think it was taken by a family member? if so I have been in a similar situation and you have my sympathy.
