They attacked a teenager, demanding the car keys. The lad's father arrived home as this was going on and managed to hold one of the thugs until the police arrived. The other was arrested a short distance away. What sort of a sentence might they receive/

Not much I would say. The bloke who kicked my door in after beating up his girlfriend with a scaffolding tube got a suspended sentence.
I have been victim of worse (the situation became very violent and ended badly) and the guy got nothing, just a fine to fix my door.
Probably be sent on an outward course or sailing holiday at tax-payers expense.
I'm surprised they didn't arrest the dad! They'll get let off with community service and fine which they won't pay anyway.
Oh...the bloke was ordered to pay for my door. Which he didn't.
I thought you were going to say the father got arrested for assault Sandyroe. The local papers would then report it as 'Brute Assaults Child' or something similar. He would then go to jail, pay a fine and compensation, lose his job and have to go on some offenders register. Perhaps the police will visit him later when they find the time.

There was this matter earlier this week with the Young Offenders Institutions instructing staff in how to deal with prisoners attacking them. If a prisoner had a staff member in a hold then one of the instructions is for that person to use their elbows alternately in the prisoner's ribs until they affected a release. That was reported by some reformer trying to stop it as 'corporal punishment of children' ! The fact it's a violent 15 or 16 year-old trying to blind or kill the staff member seems lost on idiots like that.
