Passport number taken for bringing toooo many ciggies into the country
Hi Answerbankers, i little over 4 years ago, customs stopped me at the airport and took my passport number and all my duty free fags off me. Now before you non smokers start(lol) i was not bringing them back to sell like most people do, it was for my own personal use. Does anyone know how long they keep it on the system. Im going away soon and i want to bring just a couple of hundred more than my allowance. Im worried that if i got caught again they may do something horrible. You fellow smokers will know what i mean, i dont expect non smokers to have any sympathy

By all means have a go but the sensible responses you've had suggest that you're more at risk of being caught than those of us who may have done it but not been found out. Don't lose sleep over it - and have a good holiday when you get there!
rosie. nobody is hating you...they just don't agree with you
and to be honest, from the start your post was confrontational with a tone of persecution...almost daring anyone to disagree and implying any one who did was obviously just a saddo non-smoker, who just objects to you smoking, not what your doing, and so their opinion is to be ignored.
you were also trying to imply that all smokers would also break the law for a few extra cigs...they wouldnt.
everyone who told you not to you implied they were just getting at you for being a smoker, and adopted this 'your all against me' attitude...thats not the case...
personally i would try it myself, under normal circumstances, but you aren't under normal circumstances, so are taking a much larger risk.
had you just asked the q, without all the accusational comments, people would have been a lot kinder...including myself.

rosie, I don't hate you. But the advice from people who know on AB is pretty clear: you'd have a case for bringing lots of cigarettes for yor own use back from Poland or Portugal or other regular EU member states, but the Canaries are treated differently: they have definite limits, if you go over these limits you risk being treated as a smuggler, and the fact that your passport has been tagged makes it more likely you will be caught. I'd have thought it isn't worth it.
Joko, i certainly did not mean to be confrontational, i have read my post over again and i honestly dont think i was. Is it because i said about the non smokers not being sympathetic?. I said that tongue in cheek because i know that non smokers dont like it. I apologise to everyone if they too think the same as you because im not that sort of person. I hate it if i think that i have upset anybody.
rosiew Your passport number will be recorded as having been caught with excess tobacco previously. When you come back though customs this time your passport will 'flag up' for extra checks. This is FACT, it happened to my brother and others I know.
If you try to bring extra this time you WILL be caught and for a second offence you will get a large fine as well as having all the tobacco confiscated. No offence to you intended but you would be stupid to try to come back with anything over your limit.
The fine for this is normally twice the full UK price of all the tobacco you had with you .
