How does the law stand regarding a social event and people bringing their own alcohol?

From my understanding this OK but I'd feel happier to have this confirmed.

I'm sure that's OK, as long as you are not selling alcohol.
However you need to inform the hirers that there will be alcoholic drink there.
If the halls I've hired in my job are like the ones in your area they often require you to have your own public liability insurance even though they have one themselves. All areas are different though.
well, there are a few BYO restaurants out there so I don't see it would be an issue at all
It IS okay.

The Licensing Act is not concerned with DRINKING alcohol ... just SELLING it.

People can buy and drink their own alcohol without restriction.

(and please, no posts pointing out the restrictions in some city centres!)
