Fake Competition

I've just been thinking about a company I used to work for and a competition they ran. They held a comp for all their customers where an Audi TT was the prize. I can't remember how the competition was set, if it was a question/answer thing or just enter your details but after a while a few of us in the office began to question when the winner would be announced and so on but it all went very quiet and as far as I recall, nobody ever came to pick up an Audi TT and it was never mentioned again. If a company was found to be offering fake competition prizes, what would happen as a result?

It would be similar to the Ant and Dec phone in thing. I am not sure if the Police would be involved.

Absoloute radio have a page full of quizzes with prizes and I have never heard a winner announced.
