Dying without life Insurance
21 Answers
Hi, first post here so hopefully putting in the right section. OK, what happens to me, if I die without life insurance cover and no one who knows me, can afford a funeral?
P.S. I'm not planning on leaving this world anytime soon.

errrrrm sorry bestis, looked on a couple of websites and does seem that if there is no-one else that the council have to step in to "dispose" of the body, by cremation usually

I think someone has to apply to DSS for help and they pay up to £1,000, but that wont cover the whole cost and I am not sure if it has to be repaid. If you are completely without kin then the council takes over, but having once gone to a paupers funeral and being the only mourner it was horrible and the priest/vicar was still muttering the words of the service as he was hurrying down the path to get. away.It upset me for months afterwards as the person who died was a lovely lady and deserved better.

Nobody is ever obliged to arrange a funeral for anyone else. Even if a multi-billionaire dies, leaving loads of relatives who are also multi-billionaires, none of them are obliged to arrange a funeral. When nobody wants to arrange a funeral, or there's simply nobody around to arrange one, the local council must arrange a basic funeral. If (like the multi-billionaire I mentioned) the deceased person left any money (or property which could be converted to money) the council could then seek to reclaim their costs from the estate of the deceased person. But where the deceased person left nothing the council has to bear the costs:
