Is it legal to force employees to take unpaid leave?

I work for a local authority, and as part of the cuts, they are talking about making all employees take 3 days mandatory unpaid leave over Christmas. It's not a problem to go into work as far as I am concerned, and I would rather do that than lose 3 days money. By the way, Unions are already involved, but even they seem to be considering this as an option!

I assume under the present climate, it is either take unpaid leave or face possible redundancies.
The U&=nion probablyw ill agree as their main concern is to prevent redundancies.
I work in the public sector, I am just being moved to offices some 15 miles away from home. I would rather go there than lose my job - I guess the same would apply to enforced leave.
Boxtops - if you are forced to move to avoid redundancy, you can almost certainly claim the extra mileage expenses for about 3 years - most public sector employers do this...
