What is the metal chain-like belt thing that Chewbacca from Star Wars wears over his shoulder? and does it serve any purpose ?

Its a metal chain-like belt thing that stops his big furry suit from coming undone and falling off, revealing his big furry under-crackers.

Yeah, these answers are all very funny, but is there any sensible answers now ?? 
I always thought it was like an ammunition belt.

When I was young and an avid collector of Star Wars figures, you used to be able to save and send of lots of proofs of purchases and they would send you a lifesize one of these. They called it his Bandolier (I think) and each link was a compartment for you to store a starwars figure in.

I'm not suggesting that Chewie used to store his toys in his, but I think a bandolier is indeed some king of ammunition belt.

I never sent off for mine.

 

When I dressed up as 'Cheewy' for a party (not a fancy dress party), I made mine out of Fag boxes!

 

So mybe he keeps his ciggies in it!

He doesn't smoke 'bacca' he chews it........
