When I was young and an avid collector of Star Wars figures, you used to be able to save and send of lots of proofs of purchases and they would send you a lifesize one of these. They called it his Bandolier (I think) and each link was a compartment for you to store a starwars figure in. I'm not suggesting that Chewie used to store his toys in his, but I think a bandolier is indeed some king of ammunition belt. I never sent off for mine.

So mybe he keeps his ciggies in it!
