Thats how it is in the street where I live where some of the houses are rented out . They have state of the art of everything much better than what I have had to work for all my life. Keep having more kids so they don't have to work. They have more holidays than I do.
When we moved into our council house in 1930 (I was three) you had to be practically on the bread line and you got no help whatsoever. Someone came round to check you were keeping your garden tidy and cutting the hedges. You weren't allowed to swing on the gate. You couldn't do your own decorations - they came round once ever five years and just put that flat stuff on forget what you call it, but I keep thinking of distemper (that's dogs isn' it). They let you choose a colour - buff, blue, pink or green. You were not allowed to get into arrears with the rent - the rent man came round every week to collect it. If you didn't pay you were out. Pity it isn't like that now. The man who moved in next to me two years ago has never touched his garden. It is full of grass and weeds, especially dandelions. No-one does a thing about it. We saved up and bought this house - It was hard work but it would be nice if other people looked after theirs, whether council houses or not.
It was an eye opener, but not surprising.
The couple who lived in the very damp rented house - when showing the reporter around, I thought what a bloody mess, there were clothes strewn all over the floor and it looked like a tip.
I think with more immigrants coming into the country, the housing situation will only get worse. There needs to be more council housing building projects - there are plenty of private ones, here in Essex every available piece of land gets built on.

Part of the problem is, there are now whole law firms who specialise in litigation for whingers. So instead of getting on, tidying up, digging the garden over and growing some cabbages many people grow up believing life is about watching telly and sucking your thumb while looking for someone else to get compensation from.
Mosiac - that is so very true. Thats was my point about the couple in the damp house. Also the two big lads that had to sleep on the settee - why not get a couple of cheap z-beds - you can pick them up cheap in the local newspapers etc. I know it doesn't solve the need for more bedrooms, but it gets them off the settee. Also their duvets looke like they needed a wash. (:o(
