Ghost film from years ago!

I'm wondering if you can help me with a film I'm trying to remember the title of. I think there has been a remake, but the one I want is about a girl who move into a house (more like a castle) with her family and is haunted by a ghost (in period costume) the bit I remember is a blood stain on the stairs carpet that can't be washed away.

It's driving me mad!
