When the web became popular, TV adverts usually carried the address of the advertiser's website. Nowadays, TV ads usually end with "Find us on Facebook". Why would big business use Facebook when their own website is bound to be more comprehensive?

Because so many people use FB these days - and their FB pages can carry links to their websites. You can count the number of hits on a website, better if you can count the number of Likes on FB. Personally I'd rather go to a website.
