Have you noticed how in soaps a new character will enter with one type of personality and before you know it they are the complete opposite.
Billy Mitchell and Minty both joined Eastenders as nasty pieces of work but ended up being big softies who wouldn't stamp on a spider.
Stephanie Cunningham in Hollyoaks was a cheap slapper who everyone hated and she ended up as some sort of angel like being.

Why in EastEnders, if everyone hates everyone so much - does no-one move out of The Square?
Why does everyone in all soaps have a turn at working in the shop / pub / factory / garage?
Why does no-one have any kind of social live that doesn't revove around the pub - going to the cinema, watching TV - having a normal conversation?
As I say, the soap opera is a unique dramatical construction which works as long as it is viewed entirely superficially - like the walls in Crossroads - there is no strength or subtance anywhere.
