As for why there are so many of them....
1) they are cheap to make, just a good editor and a front man.
2) ratings show as the program gets nearer No. 1, more people stay tuned in to find out what it is. so the add breaks increase in number and so does the advert revenue.
3) giving a top 100 of anything is bound to get free advertising in newspapers, as they are quick to jump on the 'Whats hot/Not' bandwagon.
Sad old world innit!
For example, I spend rather too much of my hard-earned on CDs, so if they were looking around for votes for the 100 Greatest Albums I would have expected to see something in one of the shops or websites that I go to....but there was nada.
Is the list just decided by a few Channel 4 execs, a handful of reseachers and a quick vox pop? Or
I voted on the top 100 albums by going on the website, but felt pretty cheated - you have 100 albums to choose from, so basicaly they have their top 100 and you put them in order.
The Prodigy album they had was Fat of the Land, where I think you'll find most people say they prefer one of their earlier two. Oasis had What's the Story?, when, again, most people I know tend to vouch for Definitely Maybe.
On cable channels you get compilations that are even worse. Americas 20 Sexiest Bright Young Things etc. Taken direct from US with a British voiceover then American Z-list celebs being sarcastic about some soap star's personal life.
Unfortunately we're only halfway to the bottom of the barrel and it'll get worse before it gets better.
