Am I correct in thinking shows like Heartbeat and Hollyoaks are made on tape and processed to make them look like film?

How?

Possibly. I don't watch either, but it would be cheaper to shoot on video ( especially Hollyoaks as I don't think it will have much of an international market ).

It is simply a case of repeating the first field of each video frame. There are still 25 frames per second, but not 50 fields. The picture therefore looks like film as it is not updated so quickly.

When i was last on Emmerdale i asked one of the camera men this very question, His answer was yes, I dont think that they do it now though.
A geek at work told me that the new Doctor Who is filmed this way too, to get away from the pin sharp studio look that the old episodes had when they were filmed in a studio.
