Gossip Girl (age of drinking in NY)

I've just got into this and watched the first series (so no spoilers please :)) and did wonder about how they are all able to drink so readily with all the going out for cocktails and in bars.

I looked up the drinking age which is 21 and from what I can work out they are all meant to be around 14 (Jenny and co) to 17/18 (didn't want to google the question in case it spoilt anything in further series) in the first series.

I guess they all look older as I think most of the actors/actresses are but still, with how well known some of them are supposed to be in society.

I know it's fiction and it looks like a bit of a different world and I guess money talks but just curious how they got around the alcohol laws unless it is all just fiction.

I loved the first series though, can't believe it took me so long to discover it!

If people have money or are celebrities the age laws are often ignored in America. Even if underage drinkers are caught the bars can just say they thought they were 21 & they seem to get away with it (especially if they have fake ID). It's no different between real life & TV/Movies.
