Erm... Dead Man Walking, A Time to Kill, Motor Cycle Diaries... I'll try and think of some more!
The lady vanishes, The Thomas Crown Affair, Citizen Kane, Life is Beautiful .....

The Big Lebowski, LA Confidential, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catch 22.

The Shawshank Redemption, if you haven't seen it already and my second best all time great, The Piano.  Excellent!  The Green Mile is another good watch .  Vera Drake (brilliant acting, although slightly depressing).  I also endorse the recommendation of To Kill a Mockingbird.  I have seen this film numerous times, and it never fails to make me shed a tear!

I have to recommend Spirited Away - Japanese animation, won best animated film at the Oscars a few years ago.  It's beautiful, not just for children even though it was marketed by Disney over here.

The Usual Suspects, Pulp Fiction.
Memento. Goodfellas. Scarface. Carlito's Way.
oh yeah All the Godfather film's and Belleville Rendevous (animated french film) superb!
shane meadows directed DEAD MANS SHOES others he did are ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDDLELANDS. 24 SEVEN and A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS which is my favorite film ever.

Underrated / under promoted British films include Brassed Off, Secrets and Lies, Shallow Grave, Very Annie Mary, Face.

Can you get TV series DVDs?  Try all of Cracker, Prime Suspect, Auf Weidersen Pet, Sherlock Holdmes (with Jeremy Brett) for quality drama

Have a browse around www.imdb.com bearing in mind that your favourite actor(ess)'s made some absolute turkeys

Best 'new' film I've seen this year is 'Mystic River'.  Really good film!

Bangkok, Shallow Grave and Brassed Off are among my favourite films!! :)

Sleepy Hollow, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Spy Game, Rain Man, Minority Report, Road To Perdition, Castaway, Master and Commander.

hero, house of the flying daggers.

if you had to chose 1, get hero

Or films to make you feel better about yourself, like Amelie or Spirited Away.
My recommendation is 'The Others' starring Nicole Kidman.  Beautifully acted, brilliant photography - atmospheric ghostly tale with a twist at the end. Hundred times better than 'Sixth Sense'.

Shawshank Redemption already mentioned but worth another, all time favourite film.Try also once upon a time in America and last of the mohicans out in the early 90's

Ray is worthy of a viewing and Saw good horror with a couple of twists.

Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys is a great film. If you like this, you could try his masterpiece Brazil, but it really should be seen on a big screen. On a  lighter note, I really enjoyed Bend it Like Beckham. And Moulin Rouge is staggering. If your DVD rental company also does TV series, get the House of Cards Trilogy with Ian Richardson - the best television drama series I have ever seen.

"Hobsons Choice" the other day, it's brilliant, with great actors including Prunella Scales aged about 15.
