Foreign (Non British) film with english subtitles

Film was on tv recently about japanese soldiers taking over a chinese town but the japanese commanding officer was sympathetic to the plight of the chinese.
Any ideas what the film was please?

There was a film on Film 4 a few month's ago called Ip Man which was about the Japanese invasion of China just before the 2nd world war. The Japanase commander was a martial artist who respected the Chinese martial artists. Ip Man went on to become Bruce Lee's teacher. There is also a sequel, cleverly titled Ip Man 2 which continued the story.
