Oldies in the workforce

There was a programme on last night about people having to probably work longer in the future before getting their pensions .
Can't think off hand what it was called but those two people from the Apprentice presented it .They put some older people back out to work !
The tradesmen seemed to get along OK but some of the others just couldn't hack it especially the former nurse who was 73 and had a job to take a blood test as she lacked dexterity in her hands and wasn't computer savvy .
Did any of you see it? Part two is tonight .
Would you put your trust in an over seventy year old plumber/nurse/electrician etc?

Well I have a brother who's an ex copper .He's now 78 and we discussed this recently and he said no way would he have gone back even at seventy .
His actual words to me were ....." It's not like New Tricks on the tele "...lol

In my opinion Shaney people who have done manual work all their lives are probably healthier and will last longer. Desk workers brains wear out!!

In my case my brain and my body has worn out.

My only chance of a job is with Fluffy. She will have to supply one of these at my desk.................. my bladder ain't what it used to be!!

I have no intention of ever working again!!! I love being able to do what I like when I like. The money would be nice though..............................

I was just thinking of The Stones and Jagger - he might look wrinkly, but he is 70 and in terms of energy and ability he could challenge any youngers. 70 isn't exactly very old............. Lots of people are still working at 70.

I think tonight they have to go head to head with very much younger people There was a clip at the end of some young lad who looked as if he couldn't be bothered to get out of bed ....
We shall see .I'll be back .Have to totter off now and make some dinner for the old man :)

They did say that a baby today would have to work til the age of 78 before they could retire! Why not keep the retirement age at 65 and let the youngsters have the jobs?

The job I did before I retired was quite stressful so retirement was a relief for me. However, I did get bored so went back to work part-time in a totally different stress-free environment, I packed it in after 6 months as I was bored stiff.

i dont mean like new tricks. i mean a job like police work is heavily reliant on experience and there is only one way to get that, i was thinking more like training or collating but i can see why someone wouldn;t want to go back

When I retired I applied for a job on the control at the local fire station......I didn't get it :-(

I'm unsure "having to" is quite the right phrase. "Being forced to by an uncaring society that would prefer to keep younger folk on the dole whilst bullying the older generation who have done their bit to keep on contributing and contributing", is probably a better description.

No I didn't see the programme, and yes it is inevitable that for physical or mental reasons, or indeed both, it makes no sense to force folk to carry on and on, using longevity as the feeble excuse to do so. I despair of those in positions of power. All they see is victims to push around in order to provide for the rest.

I do not, of course, infer that every aged worker is incapable, just that many and probably most can not keep up what they could achieve in their prime. And neither should they be expected to; they should be expected to make way for the next generation.

My brother stayed police related until he was 65 Fluffy .Coroners Office and County Hall legal dept .Police work is very stressful .When you see little four year old girls raped and murdered and left in a ditch it's not easy .
.He was asked to take on cold case work but declined .He'd done his share and I don't blame him for packing up .

i really don't see why people should have to work at 70, it's possibly denying a job for a young person, and by that stage of your life, whether one if reasonably fit or not, you have had enough

But em, not everybody feels they have 'had enough'. Some thrive on work and quickly degenerate when they retire. Everybody is different. You can't stop the ageing process but we all age differently. Some people at 70 act younger and are physically in better shape than people a lot younger.
