The devils in the detail with these retrospective shows. They rarely get it right. For example, you never see the police verballing anybody and it was common practise then.

Oh come on ..it's only TV .I love George Gently and Lee Ingleby is a brilliant actor .He's the perfect foil for George .
He's young and it's the sixties .He has an opinion .But George doesn't let him get away with it all the time .
Have you watched it from the very beginning ?
Mind you Sqad the TV series is nowhere near what the original books were like.
They were set in East Anglia,written by Alan Hunter who lived not far from my neck of the woods in a village called Brundall .
They are now set in Durham and Sgt Bacchus doesn't feature at all in the books .

in the sixties I used to frequent a pub in Brundall right on the river, the local plod would be out and about but should the level crossing gates be closed he returned to the village. When off duty he came back and joined in the lock in, better times then.

yes, and used to be on good terms with the crossing keeper who after 20.00 shut the gates and came and sat just inside the door , pint in a mug.

I take it you've never been in any uniformed service, then? I've been in two and have seen some so called "superior" officers as you call them who themselves needed more than just a "boot up their @rse", I can assure you.

Anyway, it's not the real thing, is it? Just a telly programme, I thought?

I did see it. Not my thing, too slow. I prefer the yank stuff. All done and dusted in 42 minutes.

As for Gently, well, if he behaved like a real copper, he would be boring.
