Hi netibiza, there was a 2-part film shown at Christmas starring Bridget Fonda.  Or are you referring to an earlier version?

It was with real people, and my daughter saw it in around 1992/3.

Real people?  Well, why didn't you say!

There was a TV version starring Bridget Fonda as the Snow Queen, but that was in 2002.

There was also a Russian one from 1966 called Snezhnaya koroleva, and a Finnish one from 1986 called Lumikuningatar.  These were both released in the US (and possibly UK) as "The Snow Queen".

Perhaps the film you are looking for had a different name?

Lumikuningatar (=Snow Queen)is finnish filmed mostly on an island outside helsinki, and if I remember correctly it was quite scary...at least to a 7-year old
