has anyone else seen it yet?  waht did you think?  I thought the incredibly cheesy ending was the only bad part - I loved it!  Best alien noise in a film ever!

Yeah I thought it was really good as well, thoroughly recommended.  But why did you think the ending was cheesy??
Dreadful dreadful film. Good special effects, but otherwise a total letdown. Extremely thin plot: Guy works  on docks, meets exwife,  aliens invade, chase him, they shoot back, manage to crumple them a bit, end of story. ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL.
I saw it yesterday.

The special effects were fantastic, Tom Cruise was his usual "plastic" self, and the ending was a let down.

I kept thinking that the fact that he had been a crane operator would be of some significance (He may end up driving a crane to attack the aliens...) - NO.

The little girl should have been THROWN to the aliens, her screaming drove me mad. The brother was no better.

The best part of the world had been distroyed and the street in Boston at the end look perfect - AS IF

I would see it again for the effects - but go out for a coke during the boring bits.

why was the ending cheesy?
..."oh my god, robbie!"

I jus thought the slushiness was laughable!

and I agree with margeret db - If i was being chased by aliens I would not want that screaming child with me!

I saw this film last night.... I actually thought it was really good..apart from the ending.  Can I just say, why did all the other alien space ships stop working....is it because Tom blow up the main one??

no its because they had no immunity built up to germs on our planet so they all died from getting infections!  If it was because of tom cruises grenade thing I would have thought it was a terrible film - although ben affleck has already saved the whole world from mass destruction about 20 times so tom does need to catch up

I saw it today.  The ending was sort-of not very good, but that was because there were lots of things unexplained:

1. What was the red planty stuiff growing everywhere?
2. How did the growth and/or death of the red planty stuff contribute to the death of the aliens?
3. Where did they come from?
4. Why did they come to Earth? What did they want?

And incidentally

5. How much did they change the story compared with the original H.G. Wells story?  i.e. how were they defeated in the original story?

I'm not sure what the red planty stuff was I guess just part of the aliens way to take over the world, but the aliens were an organic life form who had no immunity to germs on our planet, so as a result any form of life they had bought with them died.  The ending is the same as HG Wells' book - I have started reading it:

I have to admit I wasn't that fussed that we didn't know why they were there, I think it showed well how panicked you would be if something like that happened - people would have NO idea why they were being attacked.  Although I have since sound out in the book its because the aliens planet was cooling too quickly to support life anymore, and they needed to colonise another planet to keep their race alive.
