why do we have different titles for some of our films then america

sometimes its to do with different word useage and other times when the film execs carry out their surveys different countries prefer different titles.
I seem to recall the movie "Joyride" (USA title) when it was released over here in the UK it was calld "Road Kill".
It's not just films, but books too. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone was called Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone in the US.
It also happens with cars.  Mitsubishi produced a car called a Pajero, which is a rude word in Spanish.
It can sometimes be that a film does badly in one country, and so is given a different title in another in the hope that it will do better.
