I'm sure I saw a film which started with a scene set in a posh, European, private school.  What happens is one of girls falls down (or over) the stairs and is killed.  This is an influential event for the hero's later life.

The film was made in the last 10 or 20 years, and I think it had a reasonably big budget.

That was set in an orphanage run by priests and nuns. Definitely not "posh" although it was European!
