war of the worlds

anyone else annoyed that they're setting it in america again and changing the plot and characters majorly again. and the time period. Why call it war of the worlds instead of "another hollywood alien movie". I'm all for an English period drama version set in london at the turn of the century like its supposed to be. Anyone want to agree with me heartily? Anyone want to stick up for it? all comments welcome

Whilst I am all for keeping things true to their original form, I can see why things get changed. At the end of the day, it is an American made film using an American funded budget so really they can do what they like. Maybe if it were a British produced & funded film then it would remain closer to the original story.

I think it's fair enough and only to be expected.
It doesn't make it a worse film, just a film that's based
on a book without being a film of the book.
What I do object strongly to though is when hollywood
changes actual historical events, for example when we discover it was America who captured the enigma machine and cracked the code, or the US navy that won the battle of trafalgar, or that the evil english locked all the poor irish below decks while the titanic was sinking etc etc.

The sad fact is that a picture has to sell in America to a viable proposition to make. A film set in period  England would not sell in the States, so is unlikey to do well enough to justify the kind of cost that a picture like this involves. Also I read Spielburg said that he thought the costumes and sets of that period would have been too dark and dreary for the mood of the film as he saw it.

yes yes i know i know but isn't it sad that we can't have a decently funded british version which is more true to the book and of course its dark and dreary. the world is falling victim to attacking martians. If they're going to change things so much why base it on the book at all. and an american version has already been done! someone please agree with me.

Hum i know what you mean... but still go see it.

Its an ace film.

But i guess other than London there ar'nt as many major cities that being chased by huge alien things would have looked so good in.

I agree that I think it's a case of making it more appealing to the american market, but it's only really Boston that's mentioned in terms of US cities. I think maybe Spielberg would have done better with a period setting to be honest, making something a bit different in a new niche. The modern machines in this film juxtaposed alongside a period setting could have been fantastic. Could have been awful, but could have been fantastic.

I was in a way a little annoyed that they didn't change the ending to be honest as I heard they were going to. Then as soon as the red weed started to die I was a bit miffed as it was evident that they hadn't.

Still, not a bad film though.
