How strange, I thought he had been shot, cos they all heard something in the factory. Mind you I wondered why he had been shot!

I thought the whole episode was very weird and difficult to follow - I also thought the teacher had been shot.

It is bad enough that the storyline is so hard to follow but I can't even work out who half of the characters are.

I wasn't sure either. At the beginning when 'old' Bert was being interviewed, he said "I remember what they did to my teacher."
The women all jumped when there were several noises, one of which sounded like a vehicle horn. We only saw Joe and the other teacher waiting for the bus, inferring that Mr Eyre was shot, but I cannot recall hearing of any conscientious objectors being shot, only people who became frightened on the front line and refused to go over top.

I too thought it was SO confusing last night, I can't remember who all the characters are especially in the well-to-do family. Did they give the baby away that Joe fathered? I think they were only threatening the teacher as they read out what had happened to another soldier. We saw him in uniform being taken away so presumably he is off to war. Does anyone else find the volume bad - I had to turn it right up to catch what people were saying, they speak so quietly, especially at crucial points in the story. I like it but we are only at episode 3 and the story is already confusing!

I'm enjoying it but agree it's confusing at times. I also agree about the sound; a few times last night, it seemed "muffled" and I couldn't hear the dialogue.

Yes they gave the baby away. I may give up it and not a lot happens that I can hear or understand!

the women were listening to the truck fade away with the soldiers. they didnt shoot the teacher, he was in uniform, so im assuming he went to war.

Glad I'm not the only one finding the storylines and characters confusing. Also debated last night whether to carry on watching it. It wasn't until about halfway through that I thought of putting the subtitles on which helped. Must remember to do that at the beginning of Broadchurch tonight as David Tennant has a habit of swallowing his words.

using the subtitles is a great idea, i do it especially with american shows/films where a missed sentence can be disasterous !!!!

When the teacher was before the tribunal, I understood them to say that he would be 'taken to an unknown place and shot'. But I always thought that conscientious objectors were imprisoned . The two soldiers forced the teacher into the uniform and marched him off ,presumably into the army. They wouldn't have shot a soldier in uniform.What I couldn't understand was the slimy little teacher. What was the armband that he put on and why was he stretching up on the measuring stick. Did he want to get into the army?I like this programme but can't help but feel that some of the scenes have been cut short. It's a bit disjointed. Oh ! and can someone tell me why Bert altered the date on the blackboard?

I think the teacher put it there to test the kids to see if they could spell correctly and to see if anyone noticed that the date was wrong
