Did anyone else almost miss what Paul said? If I heard correctly it didn't sound that bad to me, it wasn't a remark directed at Lloyd either. I struggled to understand why such a huge storyline has been built up from tonight's episode - maybe I missed something else that was said.

emprex, I think you've hit the nail on the head there,
(sorry to any nails that may be reading this)
Its all got out of control... Doh!!

jem.
Funny that emprex, I always thought in the back of my mind that it had something to do with cricket , probably cos they wear white.
Ah but can you say it's not cricket to a footballer?? eh??
It was very badly scripted. Not sure Jenna could have heard what he said as she had only just come in.

As far as I'm aware ^ that 'full' version was never ever used here.
Just watched it again and IMO there's no way Lloyd could have heard it. Very badly scripted.

Isn't that an idiom that's very much out of date? It has the feel of the 1950s about it, or maybe earlier.
East Midlands Kosmos...Just 'play the white man' was used)

Well I don't suppose it will be long before Eastenders & Emmerdale roll out a similar story.
I've never heard the saying before. Will probably be the in-phrase among teenagers now!
Anyway, is it racist if it was not aimed at a black person and not intended for a black person's ears?
Yes, it is, Neti
has anyone thought that these short ridiculous storylines lately have only been hurriedly been put in to cover Ken Barlows' previously recorded scenes?
*sorry too many beens, ha
pips, I agree but this particular storyline is the way out for Fireman Paul, who is leaving soon.
Is it racist to believe that most white people are a tolerant people who stick more to the rules and show more politeness than most others?

This does not make us more superior than others it is just a part of our culture.

If a black person was to say to a fellow black person "come on play the blackman" while in a sporting situation, it would neither be racist or an attempt at showing that a black person was superior, only that they generally make better sports-persons.
I've used the saying many times in the past and still do, but I am not a racist.
