a billionaire, went into a store in Zurich and asked the shop assistant to show her a handbag worth £24.000.00. Shop assistant refused telling her that she couldn't afford it.

The whole point is, surely, that you would not need to recognise a billionaire. The woman was a customer, who wanted to look at something for sale......Its not the job of the assistant to assume the net worth of said customer is it?

Wish I had her problems.
Shop assistant was probably in shock at seeing a black face! When I've visited Switzerland I don't think I saw any.

Oh dear,
My how I laughed!
Yet they have the highest % of asylum seekers in EU
Not that all asylum seekers are people of colour
Probably meant it looks as if she had more sense than to afford it.
R4 news this morning intimated she may wave the racism card.
Prob the assistant was pointing out no matter how much you have you cant afford it to stop her being silly and spending that sorta money on a bag .I would be asking how a bag could be worth that .It would need to be able to fill its self up again when empty or big enough to live in ,drive see films in .Somewhere for the dog to run around when its wet 24 k give us a break
Poor,oppressed woman.
This happened to a friend of mine in French Connection in manchester, but I think it was the combination of a thick Oldham accent and a size 20 dress size that triggered the prejudice, not her colour.
It's not racism, it's snobbery
i can only assume that the shop assistant isn't on commission
What was the shop?
I just saw that report on television. It seems strange thing to happen in a cosmopolitan city like Zurich. Maybe the shop assistant was just dozy.
Apparently the store was called Trois Pommes
Apparently, due to it`s value, the handbag was behind a locked screen. Maybe the assistant was trying to say "I can`t show you the handbag because it`s too expensive (thus it is behind a screen) and Oprah Winfrey interpreted that as "I can`t show you the handbag - it`s too expensive for you because you are black" Still, makes for a good interview I suppose.
The shop in question have officially commented on the 'situation' and said it was a "misunderstanding".
237sj, that's what I thought too.
If a billionaire came into my shop and wanted to look at a bag, I would let them as I might make the sale, cher ching!
I'm not sure I'd recognise Oprah Winfrey in her 'civves', so wouldn't have a clue if she was a billionaire or not.
The shop assistant allegedly told Oprah she wouldn't show her the handbag because 'you can't afford it'.
