You could be put in a mental hospital just for suffering from what we call depression now, at one time an unmarried girl who got pregnant stood a good chance of being placed in a mental asylum.
There was a local story about an entertainer who was hired to perform at the mental hospital. He arrived and there had been a mix up so one one was expecting him. He kept asking '' where is the audience?'' and they thought he was one of the nutters, the story was that he didn't get out again for a week until they realised the mistake.
