Horror Flims?

What is the scariest horror film ever made? Im not talking about special effects here, I mean 'Hiding behind the sofa' scary. And what makes a good scary horror film in your opinion?

I think the Omen trilology still the ability to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, it paces the tension throughout and to my mind holds the "what if" doubt between God and the devil!

But regarding  modern horror films they are all so wet and predictable. In my mind the two best films of late have got to be "Dog Soldiers" and "Shaun of the Dead" both, you will note British (well soldiers had a bit of help)

The scariest thing i ever saw was ********** - it was broadcast on Halloween in 1992 (i was only 11) and i couldn't sleep on my own for weeks and until very recently was terrified when the pipes in the house banged as they cooled down on an evening. I recently watched Ghosthunt again and am pleased to say that it was theraputic and i'm no longer frightened of 'the pipes'

The Excorcist - watched it when I was a kid as my mate's mum ran a Video shop. Then understood why they had 18 certificates.

Jaws - Saw this at the pictures when I was 7 or 8. One of the most superb big screen movies ever made. Scared the bejesus out of me. Laugh at it now though. Rubber sharks indeed.

The Japanese version of The Ring was the scariest for me, I was bricking it when she was crawling out of the TV.

Personally I think 28 days later is the scariest film I have seen as it could be real and all the characters react appropriately.

I find 'Dracula AD 1972' the most scariest. The scenes in the church with the satanic rights and the earie music scare the hell out of me. And it's set in London. Try watching it by yourself at night with the lights off, and the window open. Also, a rare horror from the early 1980's called 'Superstition (AKA The Witch)'. This one is finally coming out later in the year on DVD and is scary as hell!

Defo Nightmare On Elm Street, & (don't laugh) Jeepers Creepers 1&2 scared the cr*p outta me!!

The Exorcist scared the pants off me in its day and Nosferatu is incredibly atmospheric. IMHO it seems that the more easy it has become to graphically show "supernatural" events using special effects the less scarey these films have become. The success of Blair Witch seems to bear this out as it is what it suggests rather than what it shows which gives it the atmosphere of terror.

I would have to say 'It', purely because of the fact that it's a clown and clowns scare the pants off me.

That and Poltergeist scared me to bits when my sister's friend sat on me and made me watch it when I was about 9.  I think that started the fear of clowns thing.

At the moment there isnt a horror film out there old or new that hasnt scared the pants off me as yet. I mean the new films what a load of poo, i end up standing up in the cinima at the end and say "what a load of poo, ive missed eastenders to come and watch this". Someone out there needs to make a real horror film and not just remake old ones, no remake is better than the original. And anyone out there that says jeepers creepers is scary needs there heads testing. :)  Wake me up when there is a decent film out there for me to watch. From a true horror film fan. :)

i used to have bunk beds that i was on top bunk and my brother was on bottom. I used to have a clown exactly like the one that appeared in poltergist and it hung from the top of the bunk bed. Me and my brother watched the film and needless to say my brother was scared and my clown ended up going out of the window into the garden :(. He hasnt liked clowns since, he he

That's the only genuinely scary film I've seen, though not sure if it falls under the Horror genre...

When I was ikkle, my mother allowed me to stay up and watch Alien when it was on TV. It wasn't until the adverts came on in the middle that she found me hiding behind the sofa!!

The Thing is also a favourite of mine.

I'm a sucker for horror movies. I'm watching Switchblade Romance tonight in fact (french horror movie). I dare say I won't be able to sleep for nightmares... BRING IT ON!!
