I'm using windows 7 I'm happy with it, it does what I need, do I need widows 8 or 8.1? What will it give me that I don't already have?

Not only do I feel like someone has wiped my memory of how to use a computer, now I find my e mail address won't work with the windows 8 version of outlook express/windows mail.

Something to do with POP apparently.

I would happily stick with my old XP computer, except that it grinds to a halt when trying to do almost anything
