I've never understood the relevance of the opening and closing scenes with Josh Hartnett in. Were they really necassary?

The opening scene was actually filmed before the rest of the movie, as proof that the filming techniques would work. It's based on one of the stories from the comic series, so I guess it's no more or less necessary than any of the other plotlines. (Plus it must have saved some money!)

Personally speaking I thought the opening scene set the noir tone of the movie well, and the closing scene gave us what - in Sin City - is about as close to a happy ending that you'll ever get.

In the first scene, you saw Josh doing his bit without knowing the background as to why he was doing it. In the final scene, you know the background and you know what's coming, so it bookends the film quite well I thought. Especially that you know more about the girl in the last scene than he probably does.
