Tribute Acts

Do you enjoy tribute acts or do they make you feel nostalgic for the "real" thing.
Let It Be is coming to a local theatre and I love the Beatles music but don't know how good it will be, I loved Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack but can't imagine how they can be done justice, any views from anyone who has been to these shows!

I have enjoyed every tribute band I have ever seen, because they love their subjects and try to do them proud.
I don't know if that works as well with stage productions, but I'd say it does for bands.

My problem is that i have been lucky enough to have seen nearly all the bands i love,'live'- some of them more than once (Queen, Thin Lizzy, Sabbath, early Genesis) so anything else is, by comparison, pure imitation. That said, i have seen some tribute bands that do justice to the originals. But i have also seen those who have turned in shocking performances. I have had quite a few chances to go and see "We Will Rock You" but each time i have backed down. I guess i'm afraid of disappointment and i don't believe i'm missing out on too much if i never see it.

You see Ken, We Will Rock You is to me a touring stage show. I wouldn't be interested in seeing one of those

We Will Rock You is a fabulous stage show - not just a series of songs on stage, there is a story linking them.

I've seen excellent tribute bands to Meat Loaf and Nel Diamond, both of whom I've seen live several times - the tribute bands are a homage to the originals, I still enjoy them.

When Freddy Mercury died, i remember that there were quite a number of Queen tribute bands springing up all over the country. Because they loved the band and were trying to do them proud? Or to cash in on the death of one of rock's greatest ever frontmen? I know which i believe.

The best Tribute band I ever saw were called 'Pulse' they were as tight (Performing) as Pink Floyd... the female vocalist got it spot on... without Mr Waters and Gilmour... if they do another tour, I will definitely go see them again.

You're probably right, mojo, but they will have done nothing to enhance the group's reputation in the meantime. I think, as a rule of thumb, those tribute bands who are formed whilst their 'subjects' are still active, are probably the best acts and the ones with the most longevity.

I agree to some extent Ken, however, the best tribute band I ever saw were a T-Rex band. I wish I could remember their name but they put their heart and soul into it and were excellent.

Arksided; i saw a Floyd tribute act at Burnley Mechanics about 15 - 18 months ago. They were called Off The Wall and they performed the whole of "Wish You Were Here". Very, very good.

I wasn't inferring anything, mojo. I was merely interested in how you thought they measured up to the 'real thing'. Glad to hear you had a great time. That's what counts.

For bands that were current to me, I enjoyed a Japan Tribute, a Smiths tribute, an Echo and the Bunnymen tribute and a Peter Gabriel tribute. All were fantastic.
I wasn't offended Ken. I'm sorry if I came across that way :)
