Just watched it on BBC4- it finished with Village People-YMCA. I wonder why it never occurred to me in 1979 as a student, when I thought I was so worldlywise, that they were so camp? To quote wikipedia "created by Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo to target disco's gay audience by featuring popular gay fantasy personas,".
To be fair to myself I was a bit too young to spot gay anthems also I had no idea any of the afore mentioned people were gay until they came out. Seems daft as most of them seem obvious with hind sight.
yesh and Armistead Maupin
who wasnt a singer I agree
people used to write to him and say he was nt real as his name was an anagram of ' is a name I made up'. But it was real to him when he was arrested in a men's lavatory in Picc. That'll teach him to write Tales of a City
