The series wasn't axed. Peter Moffat, the creator and writer has decided not to write any more episodes.
And, i believe, he has credited us with enough intelligence to read between the lines. No way was Martha going to stay when all they would be taking on from now on would be prosecution cases, so she's simply left - probably gone back home "I miss home" she said. Obviously, Billy dies. Have only just caught up with it, I did enjoy it, except the ending, I guessed she went into the river, why did Martha suddenly become unhinged? was it cos she caught Rupert making love, or because she lost the case, or the because she didn't want to be prosecution.
2 of my friends were barristers clerks (Temple), you wouldn't believe some of the cases, how they defended important men against paedo charges when they knew full well they were guilty, I couldn't believe they do this, but the winning is the be all and end all.
