Mmm. Not quite sure about this. The music (or sounds) was weird and at time unnecessary. Good casting and acting. Quirke never seemed to actually do any work though - just get drunk. And having a main character who is only known by his surname even within his family is odd. (I have never known anyone who just goes by their surname except on TV or films.) I like Gabriel Byrne but I'm not sure this series is for me.

No, we turned off after 15mins. We had trouble hearing the spoken word clearly as well.
Was really looking forward to this but was so disappointed. Lots of mumbling and I literally "lost the plot" so won't be watching again.
dull and overcomplicated.
Oh dear....I have recorded it....but if they're mumbling I can't be doing with it....so not worth watching then?
Thanks for this, I was tired last night so didn't watch it...I won't bother with IPlayer.
I knew someone who used his surname but it did sound like a first name so no one ever questioned it.
I don't think the plot was over-complicated. Over contrived, maybe, but i guessed what would happen next virtually throughout the programme, even down to the fact that Michael Gambon was the father of the 'adopted' baby. I agree with the mumbling and some of the dialogue we could hear plainly was superfluous. When the nurse took the newborn into the orphanage, the sister said, "And this will be the newborn baby?" To which the nurse should have replied, "No. This is a packet of cornflakes."
Started watching this on iPlayer. Dimly lit with sotto voce dialogue. Gave up after half an hour. As an idea it had promise though, so I may go back to it when I'm more in the mood.
Have to agree with all the comments - gave it over half an hour but switched off.
First instinct was to change channels ,again because of the gloominess and mumbling, but stuck it out and got hooked on the story so will continue to watch. Had to laugh at the 'newborn baby',must have been a few months old anyway, otherwise I'm very sorry for its mother
We also gave it around 20 minutes then turned it off. The sound didn't seem right to us. Not as bad as Jamaica Inn but not right.
If you missed the first 5 minutes you would never have known Quirke was a pathologist. They seemed to nip over to Boston at the drop of a hat. I had assumed they were going to Boston, County Clare, until the Nun said all the adopted babies were naturalised Americans. Must pay more attention.

I agree with the comments about the poor sound quality. It was almost Jamaica Inn Pt II. I resorted to subtitles, again.
