Well, at last the mystery may be solved. For it appears that the inspiration - or perhaps obsession - is none other than Bernard Jenkin, the Tory MP for North Essex and former shadow defence secretary.
Mr Jenkin's wife, Anne, is a former girlfriend of the award-winning writer and - in the kind of in-joke that is a hallmark of much of his work - Curtis appears intent on getting back at his erstwhile love rival.
