Could possibly be " SLEEPERS" starring Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Bacon. But it also sounds abit like "ORPHANS" starring Albert Finney & Mathew Modine. Hope that helps.

its not sleepers.  one of my favourite films.  sleepers is about four boys that go to a juvie and get abused, then two of the boys kill the guy that abused them twenty odd years later.  no uncles, no hanging of young girl.

Janet can't remember the name of the film so perhaps the details are a little sketchy too? Just putting out a couple of ideas. My film buff mate answered for me anyway. I'll blame him if i'm wrong. But take all the praise if i'm right, which might be a tad difficult after this post. :-p

does sound like Once were Warriors - is that the toughest film ever not to involve guns? (Because it wasn't from Hollywood. The director went on to do an 007 movie, which did involve guns and was much less impressive)

Once Were Warriors is a fantastic film, very very powerful.  But the uncle was not doted on by a gang (the father was a Mauri) and raped the girl who was 14.  The sequel is rubbish though.

If you do like Once Were Warriors though, watch War Zone.

Ray Winstone plays a father who abuses his daughter for years (she is 18 in the film) and his son finds out, it's about how the family deal with it.  I couldn't watch for some parts as they were too graphic (worse than once were warriors I think), but powerful and moving.
