Minnie Caldwell, the simple one, was the one with the cat. Martha was altogether a much sterner character, sometimes even putting Ena into her place. In 1964 the producers decided to kill her off, much to the displeasure of the actress who played the part. At the time it was considered to be on a par with the death of Grace Archer on the wireless, way back in 1955.

I can only remember Ena, Minnie and Martha very vaguely.
you are showing your age, tony.....
Bet you remember them to ( vaguely ) DT lol.
Clearly, tony, it was them specsavers back then. Do you remember Kennedy's assassination? - that was was very 'memorable' for me - told my mater about it, not that she can remember that now!

I'm not as old as you two...;-) but mr.c asked was Minnie Caldwell's cat called Tiddles?
Minnie's cat was called Bobby.
No, he was called Bobbie (runs away and hides in shame for knowing that).
Hilda had a cat called Rommel.
Do you remember Kennedy's assassination? -

Yes I can, just about DT.

Where was you what was you doing....
At home and I probably saw it ( the news ) on tv.

I was only watching 'watch with mother' then!
So was I usually, cupes.
At home, a small dining room where the b & w tv was; I was age 8 and went through to the mater to tell her, the mater somewhat freaked out that an 8 year old knew....a Friday it was.
What I remember is that the day after Kennedy's assassination his supposed assassin was murdered in broad daylight. This rather inconveniently clashed with the first episode of Dr Who!
A clear memory of it then, DT.
I remember it well. I was 13 and baby sitting my 7 year old sister. Dad was at work and Mum was in a restaurant, out on a posh hen night.
